Coal, Biomass, and Natural Gas to Liquid (CBGTL) Hybrid Energy System

The United States transportation sector's dependence on petroleum has motivated efforts to discover alternative energy sources and processes to fulfill the nation's demand. A novel hybrid coal, biomass, and natural gas to liquid (CBGTL) process has been developed to produce gasoline, diesel, and kerosene in ratios consistent with the United States transportation demands. This figure shows the overall process features that includes (i) parallel syngas generation trains using coal and biomass gasifiers, (ii) syngas treatment units, (iii) hydrocarbon production via Fisher Tropsch reactions, (iv) product upgrading units, (v) oxygen and hydrogen production, and (vi) simultaneous heat and power integration. The process is able to recycle CO2 within the system, enabling it to achieve a near-100% conversion of feedstock carbon to fuel products.
